BASAL METABOLIC RATE (BMR)

BASAL METABOLIC RATE (BMR)

Basal metabolic rate related to the number of calories your body burns at rest. There are a number of areas that can influence the amount of calories expended including total body weight, fat free mass, muscle mass and hormones such as leptin, insulin, thyroid and catecholamines.

Metric BMR Formula

The BMR formula uses height, weight, age and gender to calculating the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This is more accurate than calculating calorie needs based on body weight alone, however this equation will not be incredibly accurate in very muscular clients as it will underestimate calorie needs.

WOMEN BMR = 655 + (9.6 X WEIGHT IN KILOS) + (1.8 X HEIGHT IN CM) - (4.7 X AGE IN YEARS).

MEN BMR = 66 + (13.7 X WEIGHT IN KILOS) + (5 X HEIGHT IN CM) - (6.8 X AGE IN YEARS).
